Hi gents,

As you well know, the cable management on 2003 Volusia sucks big time.
I'm thinking about how could I hide them and, following some sightings from Matlock, I wonder if it would be possible to feed them through the handlebar.

To all you savvy gents, how much can you bend throttle/clutch cables?
I assume the more bent they will be, the more wear will occur on bends..but that would be something to bear in mind when servicing and as long as they will work without a problem, it's something I could live with.

Failing that, maybe at least I could hide the electric stuff.

I can't believe I'm saying all that.... here I was shaking when putting custom grips on and now I'm thinking about drilling holes in handlebar.
Damn you modding bug... it's ALL YOUR FAULT! Hiding cables 215375Hiding cables 2343124779

Electrics would be a massive headache because you would have to either splice all the wires or separate them at the switch end. I remember dave (Mr I) considered this when he put ape hangers on his bike but found it to be to awkward. He said it would have been easy enough for one side but the other side had double the wires so he just extended them. Have a look at his ape hanger thread, it is mentioned in there LINKY

As for the cables, if you don't like the way the cables stick out on your model, might be easier to go for throttle assembly off of a later model. They do come up occasionally on ebay, then you would have the more modern closer fitting cable setup

Bars without cables or wires are so sweet.
Been thinking about doing a mod like that but havent really gotten it going yet. Dont even know if it is possible to fit both cables and throttle inside a 1" bar if you do it yourself.

Found this picture of the mechanics regarding interial throttle. Might be to some help for you in your quest.

I think the wiring could be done with standard bars and a bit of work, I don't think the throttle and clutch could though?, once you start bending cables they tend to stick.

I thought so... so the option for the cables would be to cover them in some chrome brainded sleeving and focus on hiding the wiring.

Sounds like a plan.

And regarding the splitting of the wiring/rewiring etc etc I just had an idea..
Why not roll back the wiring from the case, hide it, make a connector at the end of it and then just run brand new wiring via desired route to the case and connect it to the old ones...making it sort of a modular build, allowing you to relatively easy roll back to the old way.

I'm not sure if I described well what I mean...

Just be careful that you don't damage the integrity of the bars with overly large holes to get the wires through

That's sound advice mate... with 1" it wouldn't take much to knacker the integrity.
