My M50(2012) seems to only have limited adjustment. I seem to be missing something, so does any one have any advice on this? I need a bit more toe room for some adventure boots, but don't want to have to lift my foot to change down.
I cannot see any reference to this in either the service manual or owners manual.

You can easily move the gear shift to give you a larger area under it. However it is impossible gain area under it without having to lift your foot higher to change down through the gears.

You won't get that much difference just using the adjuster, I moved mine by taking the whole lever off the cog and putting it back on at a different angle.

You may want to look into getting a heel-toe shifter, then you wouldn't have to worry about your new boots fitting under the lever.
