Gents,

Question to the mighty mechanics... Carb spluttering, coughing... 523039737

My friend's VN800 just died on him on the road...long period of not being used has had its toll I guess.
It started coughing and died... AA was out to collect him and after taking tank off and fiddling they concluded it's the carb.

From what I gather it does that:

Now... will pouring injector cleaner in and giving it the beans on the motorway help in any way?
From what I gather having carb cleaned can cost and he's already looking at Drayton Croft, something I'd rather spare him if I can.

Maybe it's filter or plugs...or at least check the plugs first?

Thoughts?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Looks like it's backfiring through the carb to me? carb cleaner (redex or similar) would clean that out, also it could be air getting in around the rubbers boots that hold them on, check it all over for leakages and make sure the clamps are tight, check the fuel filter too for blockages, Nice looking bike by the way.

The guys in the know will need some clarification on this Marcin, its a bit confusing. Is the bike running or not?
I thought the bike was a non runner from what you have said but then you say about blasting it down the motorway

He rode it from seller (Solihull) to home (Hinckley) and was OK.
Today he hopped on it and tried riding again but after a while he died on him.

Sounds like some crap loosened and clogged something up...

So its a non runner then, in that case a carb strip down is the only way
Redex and the like will help loads with varnished and gunked up carbs but not with loose lumps

There is some petrol in it? silly question I know, but picking up a new bike you just never know what the gauge is like.

Well gents, for a non runner...it goes like a bastard Carb spluttering, coughing... 2747638305
I just came back from a night run with him. We've done 20odd miles of b roads and it sounds better now.

When he came the idle was irregular and choking a bit, then when he added throttle it became rock solid but too fast...like choke was open (it wasn't) and then settled down again to slightly irregular purr (Vulcans do sound sweet)

He stretched it nicely, going 70mph at times and only occasionally the bike popped on junctions.

Back home, we stopped just before splitting and the idle was nice and almost matching to mine so I reckon the bike is on the mend and the problem might not be a big one...
He's a reasonable chap though and will be booking it for full service to avoid any nasty surprises.

True Sim haha.. but with the seller being private I'd probably do the same....
Then again...with stupidly low 3400 miles on the clock, what could be so badly wrong..

He's gonna enjoy that bike big time.
