PostSubject: Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800   Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800 Icon_minitimeTue Jan 01, 2013 1:11 pm

As you can see I have now started my conversion of some of the bikes chrome to black, kind of in line with the new 2013 1500
My original plan was to go with the stock "nebular black" paint which I have but I think I am preferring the silk black that I have on there at the moment.
The whole thing up to this point has had about 11 coats of paint in about 4 stages, with days of curing in the boiler cupboard. The last coats which went on yesterday have only had 24 hours of cuing as I now need to use the bike tomorrow for work, so I had to fit them.
I started by giving these (originally chrome) parts a good clean and a really good rubbing down. I then used a couple of coats of special metals primer and rubbed that down. I tried to find the Hammerite special metals primer as suggested by our resident painter Sim but couldn't find it in my local shops so bought an alternative. As it stands now it had 3 coats of primer, which were rubbed down with a fine grit between coats. After I had finished this it went in the boiler cupboard over night. It then had 3 coats of spray with a 15/20 minute rest before the 2nd and then 3rd coats were applied. It then went in the boiler cupboard again for a night or two before being rubbed down with a wet & dry fine grit ready for the next stage where I did the same and again put it back in the boiler cupboard for curing for another couple of days. As already said the final coats went on yesterday and was put in the boiler cupboard for another 24 hours, I would have liked to have left it in there for a lot longer really but as I now need the bike I had to fit it. Luckily the parts sprayed are not anywhere that will get knocked in any way so they should be fine, especially when you consider how much curing time the previous coats got.

............................................................................................................
Be careful when spraying to ensure the parts and spray are at room temperature and that the atmosphere is dry. I originally attempted this within a cold shed after it had been raining for days and it ended up looking like shit & I was forced to rub it all back down again.

Cheers Guys, I really like it the way it is with satin black so will probably just keep the nebular black for touching up the frame & so on now. Morgan I haven't clear coated this at present but would have done if I had used the nebular as originally planned. I will probably not clear coat the satin black as although it will help protect it, it also means that should I need to touch up a piece it becomes a lot of work. I will probably do the tail light next & will also respray the gloss black sections of my new M109 spike air filter to satin as well when that arrives.

Looks like a real top job there Mr I, proper qaulity finish mate. Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800 276246

I reckon when you do your tail light satin black, because it is the clear aftermarket one, will look even better with a black casing than the one from the newly styled 1500. Good move Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800 184121345

What is over done to one person is under done to another and vice versa, I will stop when I am happy with it. My plans for satin black are the ,,,,,,

Rear light surround (I agree Crash, my one will look much better satin black than the one on the new 1500)
The large chrome section between the rear indicators, that also houses the number plate light.
The chrome section between the front indicators.
The M109 spike air filter will also be resprayed satin black over the gloss black sections.
The stock handle bar risers (I will be removing the 2" extensions)
The VS1400 drive (still to be fitted over the next few months)
Either the rear dome of the headlight bucket or possibly the front section instead (both are only possible)
The front brake Calliper (with satin smoothrite)

I will stop spraying after these parts have been done, as I will have achieved what I want.

I think that you have got the list of planned parts absolutelly spot on, looking forwad to seeing the finished project. I'm glad you have decided to leave the indicators out of the equation after all, same as the have on the 1500cc

A boiler cupboard is where your central heating boiler goes, they're usually a small cupboard and relatively warm due to the boiler giving heat off.

Nothing dumb about that dave because we need to heat our houses & you don't Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800 3307848339 If it was our nearly non existant summer Mr I would probably have just put the sprayed parts in the sun to cure them

Thanks for the education on boiler heat. I have natural gas heat. Oh contrer it gets cold here. It has been 20 degrees F. At night since Christmas gets to 40/50 daytime. Today it is almost 80. Went for a ride today. Back to cold tomorrow. I kind of know about European winters I spent 3 years in Bitburg Germany when I was USAF before i went to Viet Nam. 65/68. Dave the ProudTexson

It is a difference in vocabulary. Here a cupboard is where we store food.
What y'all call a heater cupboard we call a heater closet. Of course
Y'all don't say y'all. Mr.I thanks for putting this post up. I have been
wanting to paint mine but was afraid to try it. I think with this
instruction I will try it. Dave the ProudTexson

Dave I was thinking about painting this cover. I was having a problem with sun  today when I was coming back from Sweetwater.  I think this is something I will do this winter.

Thanks Jimmy, I am very pleased with how it looked then and still looks now. Resprayed Chromed Parts / Suzuki Intruder C800 3005623951

Tex I am not a heavily experienced rattle can sprayer but do usually get the finish I want on the occasions that I do it, so follow my advice with caution. I used roughly a 1000 grit wet & dry grit paper between coats.
As for the sun reflecting off the chrome, yes this will certainly help with that.
I did also spray the chrome around the rear light as well but it would seem never took a photo of that at the time so I will get one of that. The only difference with my rear light is I replaced the big red light with a clear screened light with LED's that would light up red, that looks very good sprayed as well.
