PostSubject: Solo seat   Solo seat Icon_minitimeWed Sep 18, 2013 1:54 pm

Hi

Now that Lindsay has her own bike (the V125) I am looking to alter my ride to a solo seat. Took the sissy bar off today and tried to remove the pillion. Wouldn't budge, so I sprayed it with Cillit Bang (worked on a stuck tab a couple of months ago) and left it for an hour. Went back and it started moving....or so I thought. I was left with the head of the bolt!! Snapped right off. I will need to get the rest of it drilled out (but taking the cheap option of plugging it - as was going to do that anyway)

I was going to remove the pillion anyway, but on looking at the stock seat, there is a large gap at the back (that the Scottish weather will get into) and as I don't have a huge amount of cash at the moment, wondered if anyone had a neat idea about sealing that gap in a semi-permanent way (until I can get a decent seat made from Area51)?

The bike looks the dogs danglies without the pillion I have to say and would like to keep it that way for the majority of the time.

Cheers

G

Can't think of any idea that wouldn't involve investing, sorry.

You're quite brave with Cillit...doesn't that stuff damage paint?

Feck.......

Wiped it all off the paintwork.... but as usual thought it was a good idea at the time. I will keep an eye on it now though.

Went back out to fit a couple of washers on the seat bolts and lo and behold another head snapped straight off.

I must be bloody superman with unknown strength!!!!

For the future, always use WD40 mate...our little Godsent miracle of a liquid.

As for the bolts, if they're anything like on my 2002 model...you must be a superman O_o
They're thick buggers.

The gap you are talking about I believe is the on at the rear of the rider seat, No problem with weather getting in there I would not have thought as there are plastic walls (for want of another word) under the seat which will route any weather/down ours of rain away from the electrical area whic is rather well protected.
Wd40 on an bolts that are hard to budge for a day or a night and then as you attempt to turn them, use a smaller hammer to tap downwards on them but not to help you turn it sideways as that will help break the seal that it has built up over time

Cheers Captain.

Off to B&Q to get some 'outers' as the handymen call them - apparently -  and some WD40. Cillit Bang is back under the sink......

I just love making work for myself...NOT!

The list of things I want to do to the bike - Floorboards, Volusia bars (from Scotland Warrior), Engine bars (from the Polish site), Cruiser Screen - I think it's actually going to look more like a C800 than an M800 at the end of all this.

Maybe I bought the wrong bike Solo seat 1090754380

Make it your own bike Graeme, good thing about the 800 is that so many things are interchangeable and there are so many aftermarket parts & over time it will become unique to you

I used black duct tape to cover over the gaps when I put the bag on were the seat was. It has held ok. Looks a bit tatty, but not as much a chunky silver bits poking out in unwanted places.
I have been thinking of making some kind of cowl to use there, but have been to lazy.

I made my own seat for the VZ800. quite simple to make the seat pan out of glassfiber and then cut some foam and pull some synthetic leather on to it... Or let a profesional fix the foam and cover.

So , how do you make the seat pan out of glass fibre? Surely a messy procedure.

stuck bolts WD40 as said above small hammer as said above if I get a nut and bolt that tricky I spray it in the day time before I go out on my bike then again when I get home and give it little tap with what ever is at hand  do that for a few days or so then I go out to my bike tap it use a heat gun to heat it up then give it some more WD40 (heat is great) job done

Coffeescoffer:
Yeah its a bit messy but not as long as you cover everything its no big deal.

When i did mine i did it in theses steps.
1. cut a cardboard that fits between the framepipes where you want the seat.
2.use alot of masking tape to make the cardbord stuck where you want it. Allso mask all the areas that you  want to have moulding of.
3.tape with teflon tape over the area you want to mould. And wax it with hard vax.
4. cover the parts of the bike that you dont want to get epoxy on. I used tin-foil and plastic.

Then its juts to palster away Wink

I may have to give this a go. Do the screw on bits that secure the seat via the tongue etc just screw onto the fibre glass pan. I would have thought it not too secure.

On the VZ800 -98 there arent any screws. Just a bracket to hold the front and a "coned spike" to lock in the back.
If i should mould anything that needs to have a screw/thread i would prefabricate a bracket and put it in the right place while plastering so it gets "glued" together with the seatpan.
