PostSubject: Saddlebags   Mon Apr 07, 2014 4:48 pm

Hi ---    I am considering adding a set of panniers to my 2012 vl800  ,  and would like some opinions as to whether to go  for hard or soft bags .  Also where to get the best deal on-line

Well it depends on what you want them for? I personally have a pair of'mammoth' bags from Custom Cruisers in Alfreton Derbyshire & they cost me £100-, softish leather style bags but very large.
If you only want to pack some small kit & want security then hard bags are the answer but can be difficult to mount sometimes but can be done.
Several of the group have them so they may possibly reply to your question.

I have This type of thing

They were ok to fit....

Pros: lockable which I like, so you can leave disclock, waterproofs etc in the whole time.

They have lighting (which I upgraded to bright red LED)

Cons: wish they were bigger for holidays. Even with a big hold all lashed the sissy bar, not much capacity 2 up.

Mine were an ebay bargain missing the metalwork, so we're stupidly cheap, but  I think retail they would be about £99.

Before that I had a pair of throw over leather saddlebags. Needed a support frame to stop them flying about or swinging into the wheel, but the weight was carried on the linking leather panel, and I found this chafed the rear mudguard a little.

Good luck in your search...

Definately a personal choice,I have both Givi hard luggage and leather look soft panniers, which I swop and change as the mood takes me.They both have their pro's and con's,so it is a matter of looks against cost at times, and what you need them for,as already stated good luck.

Mal, I have these panniers too and have been looking at changing to LED. What did you use, just an LED bulb or completely swap the light out? I've been trying to find an LED bulb to fit but can't seem to stumble across any.
Had to drill new holes to fit but other than that were easy to install. And were also quite a good price. Think they were about $84 from the U.S.

Hi
I removed the bulb and holder and just bought a little strip of led which I looped round into an egg shape by sticking it onto the silver reflector.

This links you to the pics I posted...

Ps. Mine have clear lenses so I used red led...
