I loved the look of my chopped pipes

New End Cans <a href=New End Cans DSC09311_zpsc05ucvsz" />

but ferk me - they were loud.

They had a horrible rasp & were way too much - I'm a big supporter of loud pipes save lives, but these were in danger of giving someone a heart attack.  No way were they going to pass an MOT (unless I took it to my mechanics dodgy tester) & I daren't open it up for fear of attracting police attention.

Went to see a great guy who knocked me a pair of carbon fibre end cans up.  Not quite sure how they'd look - always associated carbon fibre cans with the sports brigade.  Went to pick them up today - Wayne fitted them & I'm well impressed - nowhere near as bad as I thought they'd look.  They've added a bit of bulk to the end, but I think they work OK

New End Cans <a href=New End Cans IMG_20150603_181808_0_zpshyhuf3qt" />

New End Cans <a href=New End Cans IMG_20150603_181800_0_zpspfeuegqh" />

Sound wise, they've knocked off the annoying "rasp", but left a good bit of "bark" on acceleration - nowhere near as anti-social as before.  Off to have a chat with the local MOT station tomorrow to see what he thinks.  Plan B is to pick up a pair of second-hand originals to fit just for the MOT

Hi Dave R,

I'm sure you will be aware that you can get metal foil stickers, or even 'rivet on' metal plates with 'BS' or 'E' type markings if your originals have become obscured or worn off etc.

As Dave (Mr I) says, you've created a 'different' look with those carbon cans - an unusual modernist twist to otherwise more traditional cruiser styling .... I'm sure they will be a talking point when you park up with other bikers.

PostSubject: Re: New End Cans   New End Cans Icon_minitimeFri Jun 05, 2015 1:04 am

Thing is, I haven't fitted these as a fashion statement, but out of necessity.  The main problem I had was time.  MOT due on the 19th, I'm usually on top of them, but this year things have caught up on me.  The guy who normally sorts my MOT is unavailable, meaning I'd have to find another test station & there was very little chance that any sane tester would have passed them at the volume they were at (peardrop Pete will testify as to how loud they were).  Not only was it a question of passing an MOT, it was also how much they were pissing me off - I know - it was my fault for having them cut so short in the first place - but the cut had been made & I couldn't just glue the end bits back on.

I used to believe that you could get away with putting an "E" band on them, but apparently things have now changed in 2004.  Prior to this date, an exhaust had to display either the "BS" or "E" markings.  However, according to the MOT test manual, now the tester has to "With the engine running, assess the effectiveness of the silencer(s) in reducing as far as is reasonable, the noise emitted" - meaning that it's now a subjective call on the testers part.  Obviously having "Not For Road Use" stamped on it is an immediate fail !!  And after having a chat with the guy who made my cans, fitted an "E" band when it's not been fitted by the manufacturer, could be seen as fraudulent.  Plus, just fitting a band wouldn't have quietened them down.

So my options were

1/ Source an original set (there's a set on ebay at the moment for £150) - would have been OK for the MOT, pain in the arse to swap them over though.  But that would have then left me with either the noisy chopped pipes or the fugg-ugly originals which would have needed jetting

2/ Buy an entire new system.  Very few out there I like, the V & H Staggered Slash in black looks good, but don't know if it's available for an '01 model & by the time you've added baffles, you're into the thick end of £500.  Plus they'd probably need jetting

3/ Do something with the set I already had - quickest & cheapest option (considering that I wouldn't want to keep an original set on if I'd gone for option 1)

I found a local test station today & rode over to have a chat with him.  Apart from having to fit a legal plate (ie - not a three liner), he was happy.  As far as the pipes go, what he said was, as long as they are fitted with baffles (mine have baffles & wadding) & are not excessively loud, he'd pass them as he can see that I'd made a reasonable attempt to reduce the volume. There is no requirement for specific revs to be maintained during the test, so as long as it's quiet enough on tick-over, then it's OK.  Which made me feel a lot better about fitting the cans, as before, they were noisy even on tick-over.

I know it somewhat spoils the look I had, but they do look better "in the flesh" than they look on the pictures - especially from the rear.  It's basically been a case of making the best of a complete fuck-up.  Plus they sound great - nice rumble on a steady throttle with a good bark on acceleration.  I may look for a replacement set during the year - but for the time being, I can ride without having to be concerned every time I see a police car.

Hi Dave R

Here they call those "micro cans" and they used a lot on a Gixxer's, Kawas and Busas (although mine had normal size and was from "Harpoon" (unfortunately they close).
As Mr Intruder said, i agree: "unusual look"

If i may, i will prefer those cans with the normal size exhaust size, (sorry, but i made a "change with your pic only to show" nothing else, ok?

PostSubject: Re: New End Cans   New End Cans Icon_minitimeSat Jun 06, 2015 12:31 am

Thanks for the input guys.

I'd considered all these ideas (or variations| thereof) before I ended up where I am.  The baffles on the pipes are non-removable & run all the way to the end of the tail so I couldn't think of any easy way of fitting "lollipops" - & as I don't have access to welding equipment, I wasn't sure how to secure it.

I wanted them finished in the same matt black ceramic coating as the rest of the pipes as it would have been less sports bike looking & less obvious.  But the exhaust guy only manufactures in stainless or carbon fibre, so it would have meant having them de-chromed & sent away - & as time is at a premium, wouldn't have worked in the time scale I had.  I don't know if it's even possible to ceramic coat over the top of carbon fibre (& these are full carbon fibre, not just a covering).  I'll be contacting Zircotec when the MOT's out of the way.

Longer would have looked better (as Jose have cleverly shown), unfortunately, the mounting bracket is to the rear of the lower side-panel & the cans almost butt up to it now, so longer was not an option.

I'm thinking it may look better if the cans were staggered, with the lower one finishing about half way along the length of the top one (if any-one could PhotoShop that it'd be great).  I could get away with chopping off part of the lower bracket to accommodate this.  However, as it's running spot-on with these cans on & the noise is acceptable, I'm concerned about buggering about with it.

As I've said, it was a case of juggling time available against making a complete pigs ear out of it - soon as the MOt's out of the way, I'll spend a bit of time looking at it for inspiration.

Hi Dave R

Sorry, but if you love your power coated cans and "the problem is the noise/loud sound" how about inserting a DB killer? For instance:

http://www.whitedogbikes.com/shop/prod/212-universal-removable-motorcycle-exhaust-baffle/
I had also on my beloved Busa (foto below), but shorter than yours (imagine without DB hyst ).
I bought a short DB killer and after i wrap it around with rock wool (or mineral wool if this is the right term, the builders use a lot for good thermic and sound isolation but it's great because it does not burn).

Hiya Jose

I'd looked at fitting DB killers, the problem is that the end of the pipes are cut at an angle & the internal baffles sit right to the end of the pipes, meaning that I couldn't work out a way of making the killers sit inside & be fastened.

Hi Dave R
Mine were bought from another site but the look was the same. New End Cans 3498837457

Now about yours:
I cannot say for sure, if what i will write here may work, but is only "my opinion" not from an expert exhaust mechanic, ok?

If one of those DB killers (i mean only the rounded head) have the same interior size of the end of the cans, certainly with some patience and with the right tools (scissors to cut all around inside the tube and then throwing away the excess with pliers, etc .. only for the size needed to insert the new one DB. Even you can make it shorter with an hacksaw if you want.
The DB killer will be "inside it" and not at the face of the slashed cutting cans.
The fitment screw will be made on the background of the cans, not visible and the finishing touch with black mate high temp spray, since the oem is silver.

But of course it's up to you searching other methods, waiting for some other opinions and pro ones, because the bike is yours, the money is yours, and the final decision it's "ONLY MADE BY YOU", ok?

I was thinking along the same lines as José. Would it be possible to use a dremmel type cutting wheel to cut out out the old baffle?
The cutting wheel could be fixed by locknuts on a suitable length of threaded rod and mounted in a drill. It should then be fairly easy to cut the steel mesh and remove the remains of the old baffle.
You could then install the new DB killers and drill a hole in the unseen side of the pipes to secure them with a nut and bolt.

Hi Dave R once again.
You can do it with a "shorter budget" like this: (at your own risk New End Cans 3005623951 )

Fill the area between the baffle and exhaust with rock wool all around and press it hard.
After this, the baffles have to be thigh with copper wire to prevent from rusting and loose some rock wool durst after long miles with it.

Then you only need a cover end with an hole (with the same diameter of the baffles) and a screw hole to fix it in the backside of the exhausts (perhaps if you have a friend to cut as the ending slash cans, it would be 5*****).
This idea is to prevent damaging the baffles. When you want to replace the rock wool, you only need take the screw out, pull off the cover, the cooper wire and the rock wool.

And....rock&roll

I'd go with cutting the internal perforated pipe back with a dremel (or similar) so the quiet baffles could be inserted within the end of the pipe to keep the same aesthetics as you wanted originally, saying that though, I still like the look you've created with the stubby cans  New End Cans 3498837457  another option could be fitting chrome car exhaust tips with the quiet baffle inserted in them before sliding inside the outer pipe and securing via a self tapping screw? only a couple of quid each and come in various sizes and length.

I love the mixed opinions you get on this forum.  Now I've been riding it for a few days, I have to say, they've grown on me - they sound spot-on & the performance (which was a big concern) hasn't been affected at all.

Saying that, when I have more time, I'm going to experiment with a pair of db Killers - I'd been thinking along the same lines - using a Dremel to cut the internal baffles back to accept the lip.  I've also been reading posts on other site where people have made their own baffles using a piece of pipe & cutting slots along it.  If I can find a suitable piece of pipe, I may have a tinker.

At the moment, I'll be happy to get it through its MoT !!

My cousin works for Dream Machine - he sprayed the filter cover, along with the speedo housing & front indicator cover.  You have to make sure that the plastic chrome finish is properly keyed in though, else the paint won't take.
