| Just bought a 2002 Intruder 800 about 3 weeks ago. So far I have the Tombstone Slipstream Windshield put on, added Saddle Bags, and new tires! Pretty excited to get on the road. Any cool Mod ideas? I would like to black it out, but am unsure how to black out the motor. | |

Not if you use the correct type of paint ace. You need to ask at a motorcycle dealer or paint supplier to see exactly what type you'd require. You would have to 'key' the undercoat to the alloy of the engine first before using your top coat.

| Pete's right ace - a good heat resistant paint will work. However, the problem is having a suitable surface to spray to. As the engine covers are either chrome on steel or chrome on plastic, you're going to struggle to prep the surface suitably. They're going to need to be de-chromed to do it properly - you can sand it down, but not the best as chromium is not a pleasant substance to be working around. Removing chrome plating is probably something best left to the experts. When I had my speedo cover, air filter cover & a few other bits blacked, the sprayer tells me he had to literally peel the plating off to have a good surface. First time he did it, the paint knocked off easily. I had my hubs & rims powder coated - they were sent off to be acid dipped
We're currently powder coating the covers on Justins bike (apart from the plastic bits which we're wet spraying) - we'll post when we get them back

| We're painting the engine for Ricks Bandit matt black (then polishing the fin edges up). I bought some VHT paint which the manufacturers claim will stand up to about 2000 degrees. I'm going to run a couple of tests on some sheet steel then heat it with either a blowtorch or similar till it bubbles /peels / burst into flames etc and check the temp. Hopefully it'll be well above the working temp od a bike engine. I'll post the outcomes. For ref here's a link. http://www.vhtpaint.com/ | |
