| Bit busy at work, so thought id be clever and order some stuff online for a basic service on the Victory... Searching on Ebay for a wrench off K&N oil filter, this offer pops up from M&P: 4 litres of semi synth oil plus the K&N for £29.99 ps... its a bike specific search. Seemed a great price, given that its free postage and the filter is worth £10-£12 Started to do the job tonight, all drained down, new filter on, drain plug back in - hehe Id bought a job lot of crush washers fort the Intruder which also fitted the vic! Looked at the oil, and they've sent 10W40, whereas the Victory spec, from looking online, and from a small bottle I got when I bought it is 20W40 So im in a quandry! Will it be OK, or do I ring M&P, if there open tomorrow, and have a moan. I didn't pay much attention to the fact it said 10W40 on the picture, as it said "for illustrative purposes only" By the way, it was fun getting the drain plug out. First tried jacking the bike up on my lift.... nice easy access.... bugger! the lift was exactly where the drain pan needed to be. So dropped the bike back down, just putting a bit of wood under the side stand...... could get at the drain plug, but the drain pan wouldn't slide under had to resort to a shoebox size box made of plastic, which slid under, and had enough wriggle room to get my hand in and remove the drain plug. LUCKY GUESS.... the oil level came up to about 1 cm from the top!! PS>>>>> cheeky bastards showing an air filter in the pic... obviously thats not included at that price!! | Should be fine Mal, 10W will flow better than 20W in cold temps but they both have same hot viscosity rating of 40. | |

| Morning Mal - I never knew I never knew that 10W-40 business! Amir's '10W will flow better than 20W in cold temps but they both have same hot viscosity rating of 40' is a total revelation to me (thanks Amir). I Googled it, as you do, and found this Oil Specifications Explained on Drivers Technology: Most oils on the shelves today are "Multigrades", which simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades (i.e. 10w-40 etc). Multigrades were first developed some 50 years ago to avoid the old routine of using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer. In a 10w-40 for example the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the "W" number the better the oil's cold temperature/cold start performance. The 40 in a 10w-40 simply means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100°C. This is a fixed limit and all oils that end in 40 must achieve these limits. Once again the lower the number, the thinner the oil: a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100°C etc. Your handbook will specify whether a 30, 40 or 50 etc is required.I never knew that! I also Google Victory Motorcycles and found about 30 bikes on AutoTrader. That Cross Country is some awesome motorcycle - no wonder your wife worries about space. That beast is almost a planteoid all on its own! A wife and a beast like that; Mal, you're a fortunate fella'. Cheers, Chris | |
