| I was reading on the forum about someone putting a new set of pipes onto a VL800 and note that you can remove the "muffler" sections from the header pipes including the balancer.
My question would be then, why not just replace the mufflers with a different set to get the sound you want without replacing the whole unit? or am I missing something..... but I guess the other problem would be the little sensor units though?
it was also stated that you can get a nice note by removing the balance unit.... again am I right in assuming you would have to cut it off and weld up the hole that would be left on the original pipes, so hardly worth the cost I am thinking?
I would consider losing the balancer pipe for a muted rumble myself as I like the look of the original setup
just wondering. | |

| well i had that thought but a mate of mine had a old set of rear silencer's that i could have, ok bashed up a bit because he slid down the road. but they served a purpose to remove the baffle's out completely, before i done my nice new ones, it took about 20 minuets to drill out and then put onto mine to get that rumble i wanted without changing anything. then i bought a set of raask's with the lambada sensor hole. and tthe rest is history | |

| There are plenty of sets of 'slip-on' exhaust systems out there, which I think are just muffler replacements and leave the headers still attached. I don't know of any benefits besides they are usually cheaper, and less hassle to fit. | |

| Getting a nice look for the whole exhaust is something that has to be taken in to consideration when adding a rear section and also most exhaust have a degree of restriction in the header pipe | |

| When you look at the cost of a general muffler alone and then look at the cost of a complete unit that has been designed for the bike, it has to be the complete unit. Complete exhaust units are not just thrown together, the whole unit is manufactured to give the best possible result for that style of complete unit. Also another thing to consider is that when a complete unit has been manufactured for these bikes you will be able to download the maps for whatever combination of FI unit and air filter that your heart desires. When you go for an untried, unusual too the majority combination you will be on your own. The same applies to jet kits and getting the right jet from the off, when it has already been done many times before, the info for the right combination that you put together will be there. Personally I would rather not be the first to try a combination and then not ever really get the fuel/air combination at 100% of the output available and end up adjusting by the seat of my pants. Each to there own though. | |

| I guess the fact of the matter is that no way is the right way, just that some ways are easier than others and at the end of the day who needs a headache | |

| And don't forget, the mufflers will have to have the mountings in the correct place like the original silencers do or there'll be nothing to support them at the back of the bike ( unless one fabricates a bracket oneself ) | |
