I guess polishing over with a microfibre is out of question as you'll lift the tiny sharp ends.

That looks amazing Tex, the red & black goes together really well. I can see why you have posted the pictures they make the bike look so good, I may change from the chrome decals that need replacing on my bike now to red, after seeing your beauty.

 Is there anything I should do to keep the tips from lifting. Can it be painted with clear coat?

Your better off just being careful when your polishing the tank Tex, going from front to back would be good too, with the flow of the graphics as to not be picking at the pointy edges, To clear coat it, you'd have to sand it down  They look good 

Yes, I always run my rag along the graphics & never across it or against it.
