Removing chrome covers

Looking for a bit of help here. Can anyone tell me how to go about removing the chrome covers from the shocks on my 1997 Marauder? I have seen a few pictures on the net of Marauders with the shock covers removed and the springs exposed, I think this look would really suit my bike.
