Engine compatibility between different models? Really need help

Hello, 

I'm a new member. I've bought a 1997 Marauder VZ800 that has a bad engine. Troubleshooting led to believe it's probably somewhere between the crank and the piston. I don't have the skills to rebuild an engine or the money to have it rebuilt.

I really love this bike's look and would love to get it on the road. I'm looking at swapping the engine but I haven't had much luck finding Marauder engines from the same years. I found a used 94 VS800 engine for sale that I would go pickup in the US and swap into mine. 

Anyone has information for the compatibility from different years and models for these engines?
